With so many forum members with mares due to have foals, I thought it would be interesting to share some pregnant mare photos.

Here is my girl who is due mid November. I am getting a bit worried that she is TOO big, but I have seen worse. I am hoping it's more fluid than foal.

Laughing How cute, another whopper! Have you seen movement yet? I haven't, but I must admit I haven't brought her into the foaling yard for close supervision yet. Will probably do so in a week or so.

No not a maiden, this will be her 2nd. Last time she foaled she had no signs of going to birth but today she is a bit restless and doing the tail swooshing and resting legs and kicking at belly so dunno what she is doing.

Had to say isn't it. I have one due in Feb who also has that little bit of swelling in front of her udder and I know for sure she isn't due any early. But on the other hand I had one give birth one morning in the rain and she was no bigger than your girl there, I didn't even know she was in foal until I saw her get a tiny little udder about a week before it.

My girls belly is still growing, although don't think she can get much bigger without poppin!!! Is due any day, heaps of movement but
only small amount of bagging up. She is also starting to get grumpy [not that i can blame her] and now it is wet and crappy for next week sure she will decide to go then. How is your girl going Ponykid, she is as big as my girl and has longer to go.

I think mine has stopped growing, but my mare's mood has started changing and we are now starting to bag up. My girl is usually a bit timid around people and very clingy to other mares, but I have moved her into a yard on her own and she almost seemed relieved about it (maybe she likes eating at her own pace and not having to compete with the others at feed time?) and she has also started to come up to me for pats rather than running in the other direction. The final countdown is on now, exactly 4wks until her EDD!

I have seen first hand mares that don't look pregnant pop out a foal, but are you sure she's in foal?

Ponykid i was a bit worried that she wasnt, but she has gotten fatter since i have had her and there seems to be plenty of "movement" in her belly???

thanks Misty for that cause i sometimes have doubts! she hates her belly being touched at all!
where as when i first got her she didnt mind it soo much!

its hard being a begginer and not knowing what to expect lol

Yeah you just never know. I have had some that were bigger than that and had me fooled for months but they were empty, and then I had the mare last year that went past her due date with nothing happening so started showing her and stuff, and then she popped one out! Turned out to be in foal to a different stallion.

Don't look for belly movement when the mare is eating, as their gut moves a LOT anyway (look at any horse, even a male and you will see what I mean). The best time to look for movement is when the mare is at complete rest. Even their breathing makes their hindgut move, but if the foal kicks you should see it most clearly then.

Before you think about hiring one of them, I would get her tested to find out for sure. You can buy the do-it-yourself urine tests for mares for around $40, but these only work from 120-300 days, so if you get a negative result, she still could be in foal and just outside this timeframe, so you still won't know for sure! I think it would be best to get a vet out to confirm for you. Otherwise you might be up for months and months of hire fees for the foal alarm for a foal that never comes, or doesn't come for another 6mths! As Willow said, you can press to feel for the foal too. You can place a hand either side of the hindgut and squeeze fairly firmly and feel if there is a kick or push from either side. In the earlier stages you get more response if you press upwards firmly in front of the udder and hold it, and feel if there is any movement.

I ummed and Arrd for a few months as to my preg mare, is she or isnt she. I decided to see if i could feel movement and that was in august. She should pop soon Smile

If you are wanting to know a definite answer i would get the vet.
